Back from being sick.

I'm assigned to do [[Project 3.4]], something that cannot be farther from my interest in parallel computation.  Hardware makes me nauseous.

I seem to have missed a discussion of collection calls into MPI, located [[here | http://www.ams.sunysb.edu/~deng/teach/ams530-02/lecture09-summary-collective-operations.pdf]].  ~MPI_Gather() is being discussed.  Funny as we had to figure out how to use that in order to complete project 1.

Then we moved on to processor [[topologies|http://www.ams.sunysb.edu/~deng/teach/ams530-02/lecture10-process-mapping.pdf]].  Slightly better than being expected to guess how subroutines are implemented that we didn't know existed 5 minutes ago.

Comparison of programming paradigms

# Master-slave: One processor has a special status as taskmaster.  It sends messages to all other processors, telling them what to do and collecting their results.
# Domain Decomposition: Paradigm where each processor is assigned a portion of the dataset.  This sounds like more of a fuzzy distinction, as such a domain decomposition can occur on a master-slave organized program, or an SPMD one, etc.
# Data parallel: For-loop level parallelism.  Take a program, look at something that you do inside a for-loop and split that across N processors.
# Virtual shared memory: The holy grail of supercomputing.  We want to treat all memory on all processors as shared (and simply addressable), regardless of physical location.  Holy grail because of how amazing (and transparent) it was to program for shared memory machines when they were they the rage.
# Single program, multiple data: Runs the same program on all of the processors, but divides tasks up by processor ID.  

SIMD Example: Int_0^N f(x) dx.  

We divide this amongst P processors by changing the command to: Int_{(N/P)ID}^{ (N/P)(ID+1) } f(x) dx

Technically, from the point of pure CPU MIPS / MFLOPs, this is the fastest PC ever reviewed here - after all, you got 96 GFLOPs peak in 64-bit precision (around 80 GFLOPs obtainable in Linpack benchmark), and humongous 21 GBytes/s of memory bandwidth. Eight cores at 3 GHz each, processing four ops/cycle each, and with dual FSB1333 - not bad at all! Even Apple put them into their current top-end machine.

The BPC chip is based on IBM Cu-08 ASIC technology [10] (90-nm generation), which is the technology generation following the Cu-11 (130-nm) technology of the BG/L system. The denser Cu-08 technology allows the integration of roughly double the function on a similarly sized chip. As depicted in Figure 1, the BPC chip is a single ASIC with four IBM PowerPC 450 (PPC450)-embedded 32-bit processor cores, arranged as an SMP. A dual-pipeline floating-point unit (FPU) is attached to each PPC450 core. The design of this dual FPU is logically identical to the one used in the BG/L system. It supports two simultaneous double-precision floating-point calculations in SIMD (single-instruction, multiple-data) fashion, along with instruction set extensions for complex number arithmetic. The dual-pipeline FPUs can simultaneously execute two fused multiply–add instructions per machine cycle, each of which is counted as 2 FLOPs (floating-point operations). Thus, each processor unit (PPC450 and FPU) has a peak performance of 4 FLOPs per machine cycle, and the BPC chip with quadruple processor units rates at a peak performance of 16 FLOPs per cycle × 850 MHz, or 13.6 gigaflops (Gflops).

Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is very important for many problems in computational science and
engineering yet very difficult to scale for large distributed memory systems. Suppose you are given
a Beowulf system with two layers of switches and you need to perform FFT efficiently on this
system. Hypothetically, the Beowulf system has 480 processors that are divided into 32 groups with
15 in each group. Each group of the 15 processors is connected to a Gigabit switch with 16 ports

A communicator is a domain of processors: i.e. it's a subset of all available processors that perform similar functions.

We imagine that normally one likes to set up their entire machine as a single communicator running the same program.

Other times you will want to divide the same system into multiple communicators

*Functional divisions: i.e. divide the cores responsible for rendering graphics, simulating dynamics and parsing inputs into 3 communicators.
